Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Here's a challenge for long-term couples who enjoy scary movies: Sit down with your partner and watch Together. The 2025 indie hit has now made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like standard body horror, but inside Together resides a intense examination about our choices in loving one another.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together is the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the actors infuse a particular energy to their characters, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The plot begins when Tim and Millie transition from the big city to the country for Millie’s job. A familiar narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s largely where the tropes conclude. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim discover an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity takes hold of the couple. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a slow burn fright fest, interspersing elements of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes amidst something horrific). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and distant from his social circle. He is terrified of the concept of totally forfeiting his individual identity in his partner. This fear is amplified by the fact he can’t drive and relies on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together avoids making Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Both characters face the sort of issues that come with most partnerships a decade in. Deep down, they continue to care for one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these anxieties of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to another person, the symbolism avoids being clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could function as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion plant anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply look at your other half and say, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can undertake right now.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu at present.
