Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Medications Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research indicates that people who stop using new slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals purchasing these drugs must be cognizant of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually have a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."

A Lifelong Issue?

Health authorities recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

Users who have stopped the medication report a powerful return of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch activating and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled one woman.

This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Interest

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians caution that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and long-term success hinges on integrated lifestyle changes.
