Conservative responses to the partial disclosure of documents related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with some supporters of the previous administration pointing out the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and additional Democratic figures in photographs, while others expressed frustration over how heavy censorship portray Donald Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable light.
Justice Department Justifies Redactions with Strong Hyperbole
Justice Department representatives defended the redactions with intense hyperbole. “Never in U.S. history has a President or the Justice Department been so open with the public about such a sensitive legal matter,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a detailed memo outlining the censorship process.
Concerns Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's identity and likeness appear in some of the documents, the widespread redactions prompt significant concerns about what may be concealed behind them. Some conservative lawmakers immediately demanded greater openness.
“The public are raging and walking away,” posted Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie said the redactions violate the law, and implied that a future Congress may attempt to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, this document release egregiously fails to comply with both the intent and the letter of the law,” he added.
A Faction of Rightwing Figures Rally Behind the Disclosure
But, some conservative commentators and Trump loyalists came out strongly behind the administration.
The release—originating from a DOJ led by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of pages that are entirely redacted, and many of the men shown in pictures have their faces blacked out.
Yet a few are not, including prominent figures like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, in particular, allowed some rightwing voices to go on the attack.
“It’s pretty rich how the Democrats falsely accused Donald Trump of being a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” wrote right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files show Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a female that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one reason Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Clinton Campaign Issues Statement
Clinton has repeatedly stated he knew of zero illegal actions by Epstein and has not been accused to have participated in any misconduct. “The administration hasn’t been concealing these files for an extended period only to release them at the last minute on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a statement.
“This is about shielding themselves from future revelations, or from information they’ll try and conceal permanently. Therefore they can publicize as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photographs as they want, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the statement added.
Overall Rightwing Comment Seems Subdued
However, overall discourse on the political right was relatively subdued following the release, particularly when juxtaposed against the loud calls for action that preceded the congressional approval to pass a bill mandating the files' publication.
Loomer, who not long ago accepted press credentials at the Defense Department, had been among the loudest advocates for a full disclosure. Earlier this year, she chastised the administration broadly and Bondi in particular after a group of conservative personalities were provided physical binders of materials that included little previously unseen information.
